In “Berkeley Free Speech Movement: Paving the way for campus activism”, Robby Cohen narrates the story that how the Free Speech Movement(FSM) took place in UC Berkeley, met huge obstacles, but finally won a success as well as brought up a new thought that the young generations could also make noticeable political change. Free Speech is vital, because the collision of thoughts is important for social improvements. Sometimes, not until someone points out the problems of certain controversial issue, few people really realize what is going wrong. I understand the fears of the power class who restrict the free speech. Such powerful people feared that others can find out their faults, and overthrow their government. But we do not deserve this! We have the freedom to discuss whatever topics. We should not be guilty for generating “DIFFERENT” thoughts and express them. It is very nice for the students fought for the right of Free Speech. It is their fearlessness leads to our confidence. Without their efforts, we might not be as free as how we are today. I think when the similar situation happens, we also need to stand up and fight for our own rights, instead of being silent.

Question: The FSM won a happy ending, but sometimes such kind of protest cannot win, even at a price of massive arrestments. What should the not-at-all powerful students do, when their protest turn out to be useless?
