After reading Soya Jung's "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans," she brings up the issue of racial violence, especially in the case of Michael Brown in Ferguson and how it intertwines with past and present problems that occurred towards the Asian American community. Death of a member or members of a community is the spark that ignites social movements but I find it concerning when that ignition does not transcend to other communities. We as minorities share the same struggle with prejudice by the general population.
I solely believe the problem with anti-blackness or prejudice of any race is rooted by the systematic portrayal of these people and a lack of information. Stereotyping and its support by the media is the cause of death of many individuals. Blacks are wrongly seen as criminals and in the case of Sandeep Singh, a Sikh man, was killed for being mistaken for a terrorist. Singh's death may have been due to lack of information on other cultures in our education system as well.
Question: What can we do to prevent preconceived judgments by the general public and what changes do we need to make to our education system in order to do so?
