Kieu Linh Valverede's "Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia" describes the hardships that women in academia faced, as an immigrant to America. Valverde's attempts to gain tenure seriously endangered her life while undergoing a miscarriage, nearing death. After surviving kidney failure, blood clots, and embolisms, she was known as a "hospital miracle" As a woman of color, Valverde had gone to such heights to try to gain tenure in her field of academia, having to battle harsh criticism and political barriers. This demonstrates how the Asian American Academia community needed a voice to step out of the bubble that they were placed in. The female Asian-American community was not welcome into academia, which was a result of years of not only racial discrimination, but gender discrimination. Valverede's fight for tenure reveals how we should continue to have a voice for our community and fighting against racism, sexism, and classism that has been institutionalized within our country.
What other laws or practices have specifically limited Asian-Americans within the scholastic community?
