The Fight the Tower Manifesto calls women of color to action, to fight the biased presumptions and discrimination that we are constantly affronted with in the work field. As I read the Manifesto, I am reminded of many of the injustices that women around me have faced because of the color of their skin. My aunt is an extremely smart and hardworking first generation Taiwanese-American, yet I distinctly remember her telling me about being looked down upon and treated rudely in her work field by another co-worker simply because she was asian. Because of the color of her skin, this co-worker assumed that she was unable to understand English, spoke to her dumbly, and disregarded everything she would say. Another close family friend has also been fighting for her status and a promotion in her workplace. Although she is more qualified and experienced than the others in her department, she is constantly belittled and earns less than those less qualified than her. Although the number of women of color in the work field is increasing, they are still viewed as easy targets for discrimination, and met with closed doors and glass ceilings. What steps need to be taken to break these glass ceilings and eradicate the twisted perceptions of inferiority?
