Section 3

In “Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia,” Dr. Valverde writes about the discrimination against women of color in the university system. She utilizes her personal struggle to obtain tenure to bring to light the prevailing injustices and discriminatory practices that exist within academia. As one of the few Asian American females in my workplace, I resonated with Dr. Valverde’s feelings of isolation and subordination. I work as a graphic designer and marketing assistant for a local computer software company in Sacramento, another field that is heavily dominated by men. My male coworkers often mistake my soft spoken nature as passivity and weakness.  They tend to disregard my intellect and speak down to me based solely on my gender and ethnicity.
My questions are:
How can we empower women of color to fight for their rights in the workplace?
What can we do to help advance women of color in fields of work that are heavily dominated by men?
