Campus vs Campus: Reactions to the Occupy Movements

It’s interesting how a school with so much hystory within social justice issues and other campuses react when it comes to the Occupy Movements. While Berkeley, a school with an extensive hystory regarding social justice issues reacts to the Occupy movement by making its campus more affordable for middle class families, Davis’ main concern was the cleanup session after the movement. This shows how much of a priority our schools make us and our needs as students coming from low income backgrounds. From the perspective of a student coming from a low socioeconomic background this makes me feel like I’m not a priority and the school doesn’t care for my wellbeing and needs. This makes me wonder if the issue lies within the students for not pushing hard enough or not being around enough to fight for student rights and student needs or if the school is insensitive and the fault is in the system or if it’s a combination of the two. I believe that as a student we have the rights to raise our voice against the systematic oppression being pushed onto us. It’s our responsibility to fight against these injustices to get what we deserve as students.

Question: How can we get to where Berkeley is now in terms of social justice and school involvement? How can someone be so insensitive as to worry more about a cleanup session rather than their students’ struggles for higher education? Who are we serving if our main concern is the cleanup rather than the movement itself?
