This article was interesting to me for a number of reasons. The article was able to investigate and discuss the general fallout from the United State's involvement in Vietnam to such a degree that I still had no obvious stance by the end of the article. If anything, the article highlighted just how complex and involved the Vietnam discussion really is. One thing that the article mentioned which I found interesting was Richard Nixon's silent majority speech in which his closing lines were "North Vietnam cannot defeat or humiliate the United States. Only Americans can do that". I found this statement both bold and intriguing. Within the context of his rhetoric, Nixon appears to be calling for a unified stance regarding Vietnam in order to win. Yet by saying only Americans can defeat or humiliate themselves, Nixon implies that we have only ourselves to blame when it comes to foreign affairs. In essence, a lack of unification led to the United States losing the Vietnam war which ultimately points blame to American individuals. So were American's to blame for 9/11? Are we to blame for 2008's financial crisis? Shouldn't American leaders be held responsible and not American citizens?
