In the documentary "Aoki", directed by Ben Wang and Mike Cheng, we explore the life of Richard Aoki and what compelled him to become a Civil Rights activist. Throughout the documentary, we see time and time again the various struggles that Richard had to overcome and how those struggles had shaped his thoughts and beliefs. I recall a certain moment in the documentary where Richard had said that he was born in the Japanese concentration camps during World War II. He faced such direct discrimination from the moment he was born. I was not born inside a concentration camp. People are not born racist and yet racism is perpetuated and retained within society. Richard Aoki, whose strength stemmed from his experiences shows us that we cannot become weak and complacent. We must fight the power. We are not alone in our struggles. But many, although aware afraid.
Question: How can we shake the fear that comes with rebelling against the system? From where can we muster the strength to fight for our rights?
