Week #4
This week’s readings all tend to theme of educational crises
now, especially in regards to privatization of and restrictions in
universities. An article that stood out to me most was “The Coddling of the
American Mind” and how it addresses the rising issue of university-wide censorship
tailored towards students. Though the article brings up certain valid points of
positive integration of this protection, many of the other arguments brought
up have validity as well. Though “microaggressions” are seen as implicit,
malicious offenses, they are usually brought upon unintentionally and
accidentally within aspects of academics and its corresponding literature and
teachings. And although “trigger warnings” may seem appropriate in certain
areas of education, at a higher education institutions, such as universities, I
believe that they are not a required necessity and that students should expect certain
vivid and colorful material when signing up for particular classes. However,
the article brings up legitimate reasons why students would want to be
sheltered or avoid certain triggers as it may cause mental and emotional
stress. I feel that this overprotective perspective does not challenge students
to think critically for future endeavors and careers and limit their
capabilities in education and life in general.
How far should we censor our educational experience and to
what extent before it does more harm than good? Should we even have an
institutionalized censorship?
