The Struggle for Ambition

Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde’s work,” Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia”, personally intrigued me. In my mind, I always thought that if anyone worked hard enough, everything would work itself out. Being a woman of color, it’s surprising how “cut throat” and political the world of academia is.  I was never really into politics—and I wanted to believe that education was one of those entities that could not have been plagued with corruption. I had hopes of maybe becoming a professor myself, and it really opened my eyes that I would have to be prepared to do anything to arm myself against the system. It really makes me question our self-worth and if I have to be someone I am not to accomplish my goals.

With just passion and hard work, can we, as those of color, really be able to follow our dreams to the fullest?
