In “Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia,” Caroline Kieu Linh Valverde talks about her experience as a woman of color fighting for tenure in a discriminatory university system. This reading shows how divide-and-conquer is done in the academia world to benefit the university itself. Dr. Valverde talks about how the department said to not report of her disability as the department doesn’t have any money to help. This not only invalidates her experiences and lightly brushes her off, but we can see that the department is putting the guilt on her to not get help. As people of color, who should understand each other, the department needs to come together to fight for Dr. Valverde’s need, but due to the budget, which is usually decided by the admins above, they choose to tear her apart. Aside from this disappointment, we realize there are our many differences in the Asian American department on class, race, and gender. The department went against Dr. Valverde who is a non-East Asian woman with a working class background. This was honestly a wake up call to me and made me realize that there is corruption even in our own Asian American Department. This made me realize the importance of solidarity and how we should talk about intra-racial and inter-ethnic problems. We must work collectively to fight the tower.
My question is: how do we engage in conversation about intra-racial and inter-ethnic problems without hurting each other? What can be done to help built intra-racial and inter-ethnic problems?
