ASA 2 Week 4
I have never viewed education system as a way to profit from
or a new business opportunity, but after reading “Why We Should Fear
Universities, Inc”, by Fredrik deBoer it just sounds wrong. Education or school in general has always been
a place of learning about yourself and others or gaining knowledge to use in
fields that interests you. Not a
corporate that has a supervisor that overlooks everything you do and make sure
you never overstep rules that they implemented.
I feel that it is nothing new in seeing school become more like
corporations. It almost feels like déjà
vu in a sense that once University starts to get more money and attempt to redefine
themselves they want certain rules put into place to retain a better
image. This renovation comes at a cost
in suppressing the students who pays to attend schools to learn and explore the
world. “But corporate entities serve
corporate interests, not those of the individuals within them..”, deBoer perfectly
describe what make collaboration of corporations and educations systems so horribly
wrong. We are not robots that want to be
restricted and limited in our pursuit of knowledge. Let us think and express ourselves because
that is what we came to college to do, not follow more rules. Imagine universities that doesn’t allow you
to join clubs, because your GPA is too low, or if you haven’t completed certain
classes that make you ineligible to participate in school events. It will only be a matter of time before
students are riled up and protest emerge.
Don’t change our freedom of knowledge into a game of “how can I get more
money”, let us pursue education with more freedom.
