In reading the article, "Why We Should Fear University," I found that the major overlying theme was the destructive, assumptive, and contradictory nature of the University. One point made that stood out stated that the university system looks to impress alumni and boardsmen. They're not out to work towards our needs. This is why when we protest, we have to put in all of our efforts and make a scene. Why is it that when students rise to make changes, all of the sudden our opinions don't matter? College teaches us to make a difference, be the future, and start movements to better life. So why is it that when we do just that, we get pushed aside, or even pepper sprayed or jailed? I think this overarching theme was meant to make the reader recognize what it is students go through at university. It isn't just frat parties and all nighters. It's political, it's emotional. Student activism is important to campuses because it's what keeps things in order. As said in class, "The university is ours. It's for the students." Who are they to decide how we make change. Personally, I found the student group who petitioned against showing American Sniper because of its stereotypical and offenaive discourse quite empowering. Fearing the university can be taken multiple ways. Fear the council and the higher ups... but more importantly, they should fear the student body and faculty! We are the university...
