In "Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia," Professor Caroline Kieu-Linh Valverde documents her struggle as an Asian American woman in her two-year tenure battle. Professor Valverde talks about the discrimination that she faced within her own department simply because of her ethnicity and gender. Under all of that stress, she told of a very personal story, in which she had a miscarriage that almost led to her death. Through her article, she explained the necessity of understanding one's rights in academia, as well as your rights in any profession. Professor Valverde fought hard to be where she wanted to be, and with her record as an educator, she should have been able to receive tenure without such an enduring battle. However, although her struggle was unique, many other individuals also faced similar struggles with tenure because of their ethnicity. It is important to remember that you are not alone in these battles, and it is our duty to "fight the tower" in unity.
Question: What are other ways that we, as students, can contribute to the fight for justice for all genders and ethnicities in our own professions in the future?
