In "Fight the Tower", Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde
reflects on her struggle for equal opportunities in an academic environment
poised with institutional racism and mob mentalities. Health issues that arise
caused by the strenuous fight for a fair tenure review demonstrates how
oppression can not only affect one's mental health, but also physical
well-being. The uphill battle Valverde persevered through is inspiring and
reminds us that we must continue to fight against our oppressors despite any
odds that may face. The systemic racism happening in the academe can be
paralleled to other institutions in our everyday lives; this story encourages
us to realize that discrimination and racism has been implanted in various
structures to benefit only those in high positions.
Question: How may others combat systemic racism in other
institutions?
