Alexander Broughton

Week 1
Section A02

When it comes to social and political change, we are beginning to see the start of a new age of revolution. Minorities are no longer relying as much on working their way up in the political “system.” Rather, they are focusing more on “strength in numbers” to achieve representation. Omatsu touches on this in The “Four Prisons” and the Movements of Liberation, where he describes four pillars that must be checked to create large coalitions of peoples. This is the foundation for a free world. The best way to break out to these prisons in my opinion is in education. But if minorities are constantly forced away from education on the basis that their existence poses an argument to the oppressors, then democracy can no longer function properly. When, however, we can use large numbers of movement supporters, we can begin initiatives to start dialogue with those in power-positions and save the future of our world. The question now is, how do we raise awareness for these hidden issues and form the coalition in the first place? That is the question I am hoping to answer in this course.
