Violating Rights without Consequence

Jonathan Apostol

Reflection #6

Response to "Monster, Terrorist, Fag: The War on Terrorism and the Production of Docile Patriots"

Within this article and the other two articles for this week discussing the Patriot Act, it was demonstrated that the social construct of the 'typical' terrorist was formulated by the Western mind. In particular, those who fit the physical description of a terrorist are unfortunately and unfairly discriminated against with a series of microagressions from the public as well as subtle racial discrimination that is fitted into federal law. This is made clear when seeing how the Patriot Act allows for the monitoring of any person while in reality targeting 'high-risk' individuals who fit the mold of a typical 'monster,' 'terrorist,' or 'fag.' And the fact that most people accept these notions and acts of discrimination despite our knowledge of civil rights and the supposed equality within our nation shows that many have bought into society's constructs. If this pattern continues many citizens will continue to be discriminated against despite doing no wrong and they will be prosecuted and possibly imprisoned or deported through 'legal' means prescribed in federal law.

1. Why can the government break civil rights of people without apology?
