Reading Response 7 - "I am a Man with a Heart"
Andrew Thi recounts a compelling narrative of the tumultuous life he has been through during his time in the United States. Having lost all memory of his early life in Cambodia due to an unforeseen accident and injury, all Thi knows is his life in the United States. Thi pays homage to the vast amount of work his father has done in order to provide a better life for his family in the United States. Every opportunity Thi has for a better life is due to his father's hard work and sacrifice. Thi tells of how his life often followed two paths on opposite sides of the spectrum. Thi was a hard working student who continuously presented good grades, and excelled in the school field, however at the same time, fell victim to illegal impulses as well. Stealing became as major of a part of Thi's life as any other aspect. What initially began as petty crime eventually evolved into major thefts of car, and computer parts, and involving armed robbery as well. This saw Thi being moved in and out of the prison system and ultimately placed on the board for deportation. At this point in his life, no amount of letters of recommendation and backings could help him, and his family had to go to great lengths to ensure his continued stay in the United States. Personally I believe that although his case is moving, Thi did ultimately deserve the deportation that the United States placed upon him. Thi continuously erred on the wrong side of the law, with armed robbery being one of his most serious offenses.
Q: Do you feel Thi deserves to be deported? If not, then what would you suggest as punishment for his crimes?
