Lost and Unrecognized History

Vicky Hatakeyama
Section A02
Week 8: In Response to Prof Valverde’s “Creating Identity, Defining Culture, and Making History from an Art Exhibit”

Reading Professor Valverde’s article about several people’s experience as a Vietnamese in America and her response and reflection towards it, I was quite disappointed to the fact that people still treat others in the way that reflects racism based off of one’s ethnicity in this society even today.  Although for many years racism has been something the society tries to fix, people unintentionally or at times intentionally categorize people based off of his or her ethnicity.  When Prof Valverde notes that the Vietnamese American community still lives in a state of fear to the point where no one finds it odd anymore and do not question them about what they are fearing of, this makes me believe that such issue that the Vietnamese Americans are going through should be acknowledged and stressed out to the public even more.  It is not enough if people find it normal for these people to still be concerned about the struggles they have been going through.   Their experiences will be forgotten and their suffering will not be remembered if people continue on with their ignorance of the Vietnamese history.

Question: Is ignorance always the right way to treat people from communist countries?
