Second Chances

Response to Andrew Thi

In Andrew Thi's narrative "I am a man with a heart", Thi narrates his life story of struggling with his inner demons, his run-ins with the government, and possibly facing deportation. Thi is a native of Cambodia and moved to the East Bay, settling in Oakland and Hayward with his family. The narrative sounds somewhat familiar to me as I was raised in Oakland and seen my own acquaintances experiencing the same struggles similar to the ones Andrew Thi described in his personal story. Adolescents make the wrong decisions because they are negatively influenced and they are affected by the peer pressure that heavily lingers around the community.

In Thi's narrative, he explained how the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 almost cost him deportation because of his felony acts of committing robberies several times. Fortunately, he was able to receive probation and community service hours rather than facing deportation due to his outpouring support from his loved ones and fellow acquaintances. Thi changed his act around as he found God and now he's back on the right path, choosing the right decisions. It is definitely refreshing to hear that Andrew Thi got a second chance at life, defeated his inner demons, and has a happy ending.
