The Patriot Act as the Norm

In Response to “The USA PATRIOT Act: A Sketch” by Charles Doyle

The USA Patriot Act was passed in response to the terrorist attacks on 9/11.  The purpose of the Patriot Act is to capture and eliminate foreign terrorists through the interception of private communications during investigations.  However, the Patriot Act also allows for the infringement of innocent citizens’ civil liberties.  Immediately following September 11th many citizens, influenced by war fervor, were willing to give up some of their rights for the sake of national security.  Now that time has passed and some of our national wounds have healed, why is the Patriot Act still in place and widely accepted?  I believe it is because the next generation does not know a world apart from the Patriot Act.  The USA Patriot Act was enacted in 2001 when I was 6 years old; I have grown up under the Patriot Act.  My school friends and I would joke about the government reading our e-mails or listening to our phone calls.  It was as if the Patriot Act was an accepted reality even though I was unable to name it.
