Response #6 – “The USA Patriot Act: A Sketch”

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the USA government responded by passing the Patriot Act. This act gives full authority to track and intercept communications to gather foreign intelligence to help them enforce laws. It creates a lock-down for foreign terrorists to ever enter or leave the country. New crimes and consequences rose from the Patriot Act to be able to find domestic and international terrorists still in the country. The act creates much commotion within the country itself and will cause more for foreign countries. It allows the government to invade people’s privacy just to catch terrorists in the act or spy on people that may look like a terrorist. The act also shuts itself from other countries making it difficult for foreign people to enter and leave America. This act makes me feel uncomfortable because of the invasion of privacy and that I’m not able to protect myself if the government makes a mistake. We have the right to bear arms, but during this time, it will only cause suspicion upon yourself because you might be considered a terrorist.

Question: During the time the Patriot Act was passed, do you believe people should have the right to bear arms?
