Too Far vs. Not Far Enough

Response 6: "USA Patriot Act: A Sketch" by Charles Doyle

The USA Patriot Act has been criticized for going too far into surveillance by having access to phone calls, e-mails, and any record of communications, all of which we consider as private. Even though this act protects the public from people that are under the suspicion of being terrorists, there are some reasons for which this act has gone too far. First of all, under what circumstances is an individual considered a terrorist? Are these circumstances based on appearances, ethnicities, anything that can relate that individual to the ones who are responsible for the 9/11 attacks? Second, this raises concern, fear, and prejudice against  these people, many of who are innocent and have no involvement with Al-Qaeda terrorists.

On the other hand, what condition would the United States be in if Congress did not pass the Patriot Act? Too far or not far enough, it seems as if the United States will receive some sort of criticism for its decisions.

Do you think the Patriot Act has gone too far for the protection of US citizens?
