In Response to "Intimate Partner Violence Among Asian Immigrant Communities" by Yeon Shim-Lee and Linda Hadeed.
I've only ever heard of domestic violence as I live in a community where it isn't an issue. For this reason I find it hard for me to fathom the fact that domestic violence is a thing much less among Asian immigrant communities. So, to hear that domestic violence occurs at a rate from 24-60% is nearly unimaginable. It makes no sense for people to be in a relationship still if they have domestic violence. Either side of the relationship should be able to leave the relationship when something like this occurs and I'm not entirely sure why they don't.
Yeon Shim-Lee's and Linda Hadeed's article focus mainly on the aspect of to why domestic violence occurs among Asian immigrant communities. Although I still don't entirely understand domestic violence, the reasons behind it in Asian immigrant communities stand. With all of the accumulated stress among immigrants due to factors such as learning a new language, racism, homesickness, etc. domestic abuse is almost to be expected. In addition to this Shim-Lee and Hadeed explain that the difference in cultural values further contributes to this domestic abuse.
Questions:
1) Why are people who experience domestic violence unable to seek help?
2) Why isn't domestic violence as big of a social issue among people?
