UC Berkeley Free Speech

Tony Pham
Week 2

In this article by Robby Cohen, the author paints a picture of the events that occurred during the Free Speech protest at UC Berkeley. Students came together to right an unjust policy that prevented the students from freely "[raising] money or [distributing] literature on campus for the civil rights movement." The success of the Free Speech Movement was largely due to the nonviolent nature of the protests. Nonviolent protests promotes sympathy from those not participating in the protest. In this case, faculty members began sympathizing with the students. On the other hand, violence has a domino effect and eventually spirals out of control. One act of violence leads to another, and the process is perpetuated. With chaos, ideas and solutions are not clearly communicated between opposing groups.

Would the protests in Ferguson achieve better results had they been nonviolent?
