Week 3
According to the article "How Higher Education Diversity Benefits Our Communities," people overestimated the benefit that minority groups received from the policy of diversifying in school by setting quota to increase college admission for minority groups. Proposition 209 was established because people recognized that this action was discriminating against the majority. Under the Proposition 209, every student ideally has equal opportunity to get into colleges since it prohibits institutions from considering race, sex, or ethnicity. As a result, SAT test score and the “top 9% of the class” policy become huge factors of determination. It may sound fair at first since everyone receives equal opportunities. However, after pondering, I no longer agree with the idea of Proposition 209. Students in the minority groups do not receive the same resources like the students in the majority groups do. Due to this result, the majority groups have advantage of getting to school over the minorities. If it is not equal at the beginning, how can the minorities be as competitive as the majority? If we don’t give more opportunities to the minority group, how can they escape their hardship? The article also mentions that lower educated minority groups have higher rate of going to prison. This can be seen as a sign that the minority groups are highly in need of higher education, and we should help them by giving them more opportunities. We should not criticize on what a few people have done wrongly but help them. Moreover, diversifying helps not only the minority but also everyone in general since it can lower crime rate and unnecessary expenditure. Let satisfy a bit today and get a better future later.
Question: Are there other significant factors that cause some lower educated students end up in prison?
