A Quota on Excellence?

Arisa Gagarin
Section A01
Week 3

In this article, Don Nakanishi suggests that there are biases present in the admissions processes of some of the country's most selective public and private colleges. He supports this claim by presenting different series of statistics, which indicate how Asian American admissions are continuously disproportionate to those of applicants of white descent. Nakanishi's purpose is to identify the paradox of Asian American admissions in order to divulge the inherent flaw of the universities' concept of diversity. By paralleling Asian American applicants to Ivy League schools with the Jewish applicants of the 1920s and 1930s, he is able to highlight the "continuation of an adversarial relationship" which demands closer and more serious attention.

Q: How might Asian American students be underrepresented within universities, despite having higher rates of acceptance?
