ASA 2 - Sec A01
Week 1
After reviewing the 2010 census facts regarding Asian
Americans and Pacific Islanders, the disparities in income and educational
attainment between the two races became increasingly transparent. For starters, we notice that the annual median
income of households headed by Asian Americans was over $16,000 higher than
that Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders. Furthermore, when
considering educational attainment, only 14% of Pacific Islanders received a
bachelor’s degree, whereas 50% of Asian Americans received bachelor’s degrees.
Sometimes, the truth is the hardest to swallow, and in this case, we observe
glaring differences between two races that many consider to be the same. Is it
time for us to acknowledge racial differences that are beyond what the eye can
see?
