Fighting the Tower

Sandy Kim
Section A02
Week 2 Reflection

This week's reflection is about the Tower Manifesto which states that women of color in academia are often mistreated and presumed incompetent because of their ethnicity. The author states that often "their own" mistreat them and cooperate with the people who often look down at them. While I can see this happening, it seems to be a rarer and rarer occurrence nowadays. Having grown up in a community where Hispanics were the majority at over 80% of the population, I haven't seen this happening, but I presume it's often because this happens behind closed doors and isn't as blatant as outright racism, or because since the minority were the majority, it wasn't common. The arguments pointed out in this article are a bit foreign to me because I just personally haven't seen this myself.

Question: Does this type of discrimination happen?
