Fight the Tower: Women in Academia's Struggle?

Stephen Fan
Section A02
Response #2 - Fight the Tower Manifesto

In the "Fight the Tower" Manifesto, the unknown author writes of the struggle of women in color in the field of academia.  In short, the author writes of the seemingly surmounting mountain of struggles and obstacles that are presented to herself, and her fellow women of color in academia.  Regardless of personal worth, the author believes that her colleagues, (herself included) are instantly perceived as incompetent and thus instantly put at a disadvantage.  The unknown author declares that this discrimination occurs quite often and makes it seem as this discrimination is a universal standard that occurs constantly without fail.  However, I personally find this tone off-putting as the author makes it sound like that the discrimination always occurs no matter what.  While the discrimination certainly does occur and when it does, it is an undoubtable horrible injustice, the extent to which the author portrays it would seem slightly exaggerated to the average public reader.  Thus perhaps the article/manifesto would be more persuasive to the authors cause if the writing was not as extreme.

Question:  Can the author provide hard facts that prove that the gender/racial discrimination occurs as extremely frequently as the author portrays?
