Reading Response #3 to "Asian Americans and Pacific
Islanders in California: How Higher Education Diversity Benefits Our
Communities"
Reading this article,
one thing that struck out to me was that there is “Low representation among
AAPI applicants is a particularly problematic trend for Pacific Islanders”. It
was also interesting to see the problems Pacific Islanders face in obtaining
access to higher education. For example, the freshmen admission rates for the
UC Berkeley differ for each ethnicity, with the Pacific Islander rate being the
lowest (19.1%), the URM rate being second highest (23.2%), and the white rate
being the highest (31.3%).
Question:
What are some possible barriers
that Pacific Islanders encounter to opportunities in higher education? How
might they overcome these barriers?
