Reading Reflection #4
Reading "A Tale of Two Campuses: Berkeley and Davis Respond to Occupy Movements" by Alan Markow was really fascinating. It's just weird and a little disappointing to realize, "That's my school...and it's kind of really bad at dealing with student protests and student concerns...."
But my question is, why do you think schools continue to react so poorly to student movements (i.e. by using police force and painting students as criminals)?
It seems like some strange charade. As in the film we watched about student protests at UC Berkeley to preserve the college's ethnic studies, the excessive police force and arrests only helped to fuel the movement and painted the Berkeley administration as callus and in the wrong. I don't see how being violent and aggressive toward peaceful students fighting for their educations could lead to being seen as anything else. Or, in the case of this particular article regarding Davis, being dismissive of students and trying to depict them as hooligans without a legitimate cause.
Nonetheless, I am proud of our school too, because of the students and faculty who have and will continue to fight for the education we all deserve.
