Reading Reflection #3
When I first read the prompt and the related materials, I did not understand why and how Asian Americans opposed the SCA-5 recently. According to the statistics in “A quota on excellence? The Asian Amrican Admission Debate” the admission rate was going down rapidly from 1981 to 1987. It is understandable for Asian Americans to support affirmative action at that moment. But the recent statistics shows the opposite. The rate chart attached show an increasing trend of the addition of the Asian Americans recently, including UC Berkeley.
For me as an international student, these statistics does not apply to us. We take the exact same standard tests as the Americans take for universities. However, the admission counselors put us in the pool of “international students.” As a result, we are competing within our own pool. It is now a common sense stating that if you want to go to Berkeley, it would be better if you have a 2200 or higher SAT score.
