Omi and Takagi Analysis

Lan Nguyen
Sec. 1
Entry #3
Response to Omi & Takagi

In Michael Omi and Dana Y. Takagi's excerpt "Situating Asian Americans in the Political Discourse on Affirmative Action", they outline the arguments of both parties of affirmative action. According to the excerpt, Asian Americans benefit least from affirmative action which has caused them to fight against the passing of SCA-5. What really stood out to me in the reading was the fact that Asian Americans suffer a different kind of discrimination a part from African Americans. Asian Americans are viewed as the "advanced" group, hence the stereotype "model minority". Due to the stereotype that Asian Americans are associated with, affirmative action does not benefit them much. If considering race for college admissions, Asian Americans would be expected to do well because they are associated with the stereotype that they exceed in academics. Since Asian Americans are "benefiting at the end of affirmative action"as Omi and Takagi suggested, they disapprove of SCA-5.
