The Complacent Minority

The model minority extends beyond the immediate comparisons amongst other minority races. Not only does the image discredit each Asian American person's individual ability, work, and effort but it also places upon them a social stigma and expectation for each Asian American to be a subservient worker and citizen in society. The ideal minority goes to work every day and does their job efficiently and not try to "shake things up." They should be satisfied with being paid wage despite requiring an entire working families' wages to make rent and provide food for the family. The current generation is only getting harder as wages are stagnant compared to the rates of rent, food prices, and other basic costs of living. Despite all this, minority families makes ends meet year after year by pooling resources but the upcoming generation that followed the first wave of immigrants may not have the same experience of the cruel and real world.

The system is built and stacked against minorities, and the past is being rapidly forgotten as debt-enslavement is becoming an invisible barrier to significantly impact minorities and other low-income families in obtaining a foothold in society.

Minorities have learned that college is the escape from the low-income lifestyle, but will they forget what has happened in the past generations by taking on outrageous debts without critical thought?
