Race and Education

Reading Reflection #3: Race Still Matters

In school, many people are led to believe that Asians are always at the top of the class and usually smarter than other classes However, as shown by the demographics and statistics in the article "Race Still Matters", it shows that this stereotype isn't always accurate. The data shows that people of color, such as Latinos, Pacific Islanders, and Asians have more difficulty in school than white people. Many people believe the stereotype that Asians are the model minority and are always the most successful in school. Despite this, the data doesn't lie. In today's time, the Asian American population, along with other populations such as Latinos and Pacific Islanders, races of color, are steadily growing. Many schools across the nation, primarily in California, are becoming more racially diverse. After seeing the demographics on how people of color are doing in school, I wonder what factors are affecting their education. I feel as if it's not race that affects one's education, but rather their resources. The population of people of color are increasing due to immigration; many people come to the US not knowing any English and this affects their performance in school. There are 2nd generation Asian Americans who perform extremely well. This is because they simply worked hard and received the same education as everyone else. Immigrants are granted limited resources and do not have access to high quality education like Americans do. They are granted unequal access to high education due to their race, as shown in the article. It is unfair and unjust that the education process is discriminated. Everyone in school should be given the same resources and access to a quality education, despite their race. After reading this article, I began to wonder if there was any unjust corruption in the board of education. We as an equal nation should fight for the education of our future generation.

Why is equal education such an important topic and why is it so difficult to obtain in today's society?
