Section A02
Week 3
The article "Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in California: How Higher Education Diversity Benefits our Community" focuses on Proposition 209, more commonly known as affirmative action. The article aims to dispel the many rumors surrounding affirmative action and advocates for more diversity in higher education classrooms. It claims that diversity in the classrooms helps encourage a more positive attitude to those of other ethnicities (whom people perceive as the "outgroup"). The article also claims that affirmative action greatly helps underrepresented minority groups, such as Pacific Islanders and Southeast Asians, attend college especially at the Universities of California.
Question: How does affirmative action work? I always thought it didn't benefit me directly and did more harm than good.
