Response to the “Women of Color in Academia Manifesto”

Reading Reflection #2

After reading the “Women of Color in Academia Manifesto”, I was surprised the passionate emotion that was shown everywhere in the article. Honestly, I thought she was overreacted, because I did not know why it was unfair for the female and Asian professors to get a tenure job.

In Tuesday class, however, our professor talked more about herself and explain to us the facts that were useful for us to get her points. I finally understand the meaning behind her words “As women of color in academia, we are often presumed incompetent, not because of teaching…, but because of biased presumptions associated gender,…, color,…” In fact, the problem is more serious than I have expected.

In the past, as an individual, I thought I could not do much to improve the social unfairness and the acute discrimination. In this class, however, I begin realizing how important for people let others know that we are angry with bias and that we are serious about unfairness.
