The Free Speech Movement’s legacy is that it liberated students from the fear of voicing their opinions in demonstrations which stemmed from the Mccarthyism era. Furthermore, the FSM showed the possibility of effective on campus protests, igniting campus activism. While reading I began to ponder whether or not the students were conscious of the significance or potential broader implications of their movement. I do not believe that they were. I believe that they simply observed an infringement on their rights and acted to stop the injustice, without consideration of the legacy of their actions. Everything in this article was unbeknownst to the movement. It is hard for me to fathom that the students of the FSM were the same age as I am now. What would I have done? Is there a cause that I am passionate enough about arrest or death for? I am not exactly sure. However, I do know that I am thankful for their actions because I’ve realized that I sometimes take my right to free speech for granted. Consider what university would be like with a restriction on free speech. What would be of universities if these students had not acted on their grievances, but accepted them?
