Zoua Vang - ASA 2 A02 - Week 7

Zoua Vang
ASA 2 A02
Week 7 Theme: Academic Freedom & It’s Threats - Ethnic Cover, “Diversity”, & Politically Correct (PC) Culture

Response:
The reading the article about the Berkeley Free Speech Movement was very inspiring.  It is amazing to me because they were able to fight for students’ rights to be politically active and vocal on campus.  The FSM also became the framework for movements that came after, for example the anti-war movements.  Those movements even became national and influence politics. In the reading, “How Trigger Warnings are Hurting Mental Health on Campus,” trigger warnings are being used more and more on campus.  The trigger warnings are good to give us a notice of the information that we would be discussing.  The safe spaces that are also created to have discussions are an excellent space to discuss controversial topics because no matter what side or belief you have, it is there that we can have a discussion.  It can uncomfortable and may even anger some people, but it is important to have an open discourse about topics to understand both sides and then work on a steps to take because sometimes there may not be a solution.

Question
  • What are things we can do to ensure that use  trigger warnings aren’t going to censor information and that safe spaces are safe but also a place we can engage in an open conversation?
