Why Ferguson Matters To Asian Americans
Living in America, without a doubt, is extremely easier for a White person than a black person. While Asian Americans aren’t on the news constantly or hosting yellow rights events that are all over the media, we’re still not socially equal to the whites and that’s why people of color must stick together and support one another when events such as Ferguson come.
I’m a second-generation Chinese-American and I think my dad’s perspective and insight as a first-generation Chinese-American is what accurately represents the state of Asian Americans. We’re still new to America so we can’t focus on these social liberties and equal rights because we still need to focus on income and setting a solid foundation down before anything. I believe this is a reason why Asian Americans are absent from polls such as the presidential election. Their political efficacy is low and therefore accepts the deceptive victory of being a “model minority” because at least it’s still a win, right?
As more generations of Asian Americans come - so will our rights. The newer generation will have more financial freedom and be able to focus on liberal arts. Ferguson is important for Asian Americans because the Black Lives Matters movement is fighting for all people of color and we should show our support.
