Week 10
In the article “ The Time to fight is Now” : When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue” by Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis, the authors discuss the different struggles and obstacles that Asian American women have to face within academia. While reading this article, I couldn’t help but think back to the first week of readings as it also mentions the hardships of what it takes for Asian Americans to survive in an environment where they are looked down upon or considered to be less than others. Its sad to know that society focuses more on race and gender over the qualities the people present. The struggles they faced due to inequality is something nobody should ever face. However, I was amazed by the determination these women had and how they fought for what they believed was right. According to the article, “women are often at the bottom of the university hierarchy”, but this statement can soon be changed as the fight for equality is happening now. After reading this article, I want to feel hopeful for the future and see how much change will happen in the world of academia.
Question: For those who are not aware of the struggles Asian Americans face within academia, how can we educate them and spread awareness?
