In Soya Jung’s article, “Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans”, she discusses black rage and the inclusion of Asian Americans within these movements. Jung examines how the death of black individuals is perceived by our modern day society. The death of African Americans, especially at the hands of law enforcement, serves as a reminder that society still does not 100% recognize black humanity. Jung then goes on to discuss why this rage relates to the rage of Asian Americans. Jung brings up an important concept of Asian Americans having to choose between whiteness and blackness in this situation. She then goes on to explain how she chooses to support black movements and resist the model minority myth. One thing that stood out to me in this article was Jung’s blatant acknowledgement of the anti-blackness that exists within the Asian community. Most people and articles try to water this concept down, but I think it is important to acknowledge that this anti-blackness does exist within the Asian community, and it is something that we should actively fight against. Asian Americans showing their support for movements such as Black Lives Matter starts with addressing the anti-blackness that is embedded within the Asian American identity.
Question: How can Asian Americans fight the anti-blackness that exists within their community?
