Week 10
"The Time to Fight is Now: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue," by Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis goes into detail of the discrimination and persecution of females in academia. This brings to light the bigger picture in society, which is the fact that women are treated as lesser in professional fields, compared to their male counterparts. The fact that people are being judged based on their skin color isn't enough, people are also being judged based on their gender. The specificity of discrimination really baffles me, I mean who in their right mind started this outlook; and who in their right mind followed this person and said, "Yes, this is man is correct. All these people are lesser humans."
The issues talked about in this class really show the effect of our ancestors' primitive thinking - basing dominance on differences of human's way of life and culture. Seeing that others did things differently, and because of that, it was incorrect. They did not think to put themselves into the perspective of the people they were discriminating against. This way of thinking eventually led to descendants of said "superior" races seeing themselves as better . And everything following this past, 'mainstream' mindset created a modern dominance on superficial differences such as their skin color; which completely disregards people's actual intelligence and usefulness to society.
Going back to way before all that happened, women were discriminated against, by men, in every culture. We are seeing a dominance that dates back to the stone age still in effect today. It surprises me that mindsets - which are incorrect and disproved - can last several millennia. How is it that they were able to last so long, and how much longer will we be seeing their effects on humanity? Another millennia? Two?
