When reading "The Time to Fight is Now:
When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue," by Kieu-Linh
Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis, I was exposed to the harsh truths of
discrimination and prejudice that females still face today in academia. The point
that was made about the “phantom peril” that women face, how they are “both
invited in as the model minority, and quickly evicted when [they] fail to
conform to that stereotype”. This sheds some light on one of the main issues
that Asian American women specifically face. Because they are considered the
model minority, when these women engage in any action that contradicts this
view, such as speaking out or being willing to fight, they are quickly evicted.
Any digression from the model minority path seems to be more punishing for Asians
specifically, even compared to other races, because they are expected to set
this model minority example for other minorities. In addition, the fact that
these racial and gender-related issues are even considered to be factors in the
academic world is wholly condemnable. The academic world is meant to be purely
merit based, but it seems the unfair system, even in this modern age, is
anything but.
