Week 10
This weeks article “The Time to Fight is Now”: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue written by Kieu Linh Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Darioti highlights the many obstacles women face in academia. This article starts off by explaining how the issues within the University are due to how the education system is currently structured. The issues highlighted include those with Asian American professors, and women professor especially Asian gaining tenureship. Valverde explains how it is harder for Asian American professors to gain tenureship because they are forced to conform to the model minority to please their white counterparts, not only that it seems as if the Valverde’ and Darioti white counterparts did not want them to succeed. Valverde and Darioti show no matter how qualified you might if you are a minority you are at a disadvantage in academia. This disadvantage is very harmful because it could make Asian Americans physically sick such as Valverde’ case, or a sense of hopelessness in Darioti’ case. The next thing this article highlights is how there is now a movement against the University in support of women of color. This to me really made me think about other movements that are in place to help others marginalized, this article claims we should take our anger and form it into action that would better fix the current system. Sadly Asian Americans are marginalized in academia, they make up about 3% of all professors and face a lot harder time gaining tenureship. Overall the call to action by Valverde and others like her show how Asian Americans are breaking the current societal constraints to the model minority. This article touches on a lot of themes we went over in class like an imperial university, solidarity movements, and marginalization. Now with this information we must build forward to create a University in which their is better represented and more suited to societal needs.
My question for this week is how do we move past placing such an importance on programs that revolve around STEM yet make liberal arts programs more of an importance when the high paying jobs are in STEM typically?
