Week 10
Professor Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde emphasizes the institutional oppression of the university system in her article, “The Time to Fight is Now: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue”. As a result, there is an “overall academic decline in the universities”. However, outside sources blame radical activism for this decline when it simply isn’t true. I like to think that we, as a society, have been socially engineered to take a step back when it comes to activism. Because of societal pressure that hinders the people affected from speaking out, we assume activism, or any outrageous outcry against injustice, is radical and crazy. The daring ones that do speak may even expect harsher consequences that affect their very livelihood.
What I find inspiring about the whole ordeal is the multiple professors of universities across the nation that have come together to fight against a system one would think should be supporting them regardless. Particularly, even more inspiring is the movement of Asian American women in academia. I almost lost hope on one as I believed such an organization would never gain traction due to stereotypes that paint us as submissive and a model minority. I’m glad to be proven wrong, and I sincerely hope that the university system is exposed for their abuse. I believe change can then start from there.
Question: Who are the supporters of Asian American women in academia (besides the Asian American women themselves)? Will it be the near or far future when this movement will gain publicity and traction on a wider scale?
