I think that the article “Why
Feguson Matters to Asian Americans” by Soya Jung is a very important article
for all minorities to understand. Often it seems that the struggles of minority
groups such as Asian Americans are ignored, in protests for equal rights for
minorities. Due to the “model minority” myth, Asians are often considered to be
not affected by these issues that affect minorities. However, this is absolutely
incorrect, as the writer of this article discusses. The author talks about how
a few weeks before the Ferguson incident, which was wildy publicized and protested
by minority rights groups, an Asian man was brutally murdered in New York, by a
man who ran him over intentionally with a truck. This brutal incident garnered
absolutely no media attention in comparison to the similar death of an African
American man in Ferguson. It is likely if an Asian American man had died in
Ferguson, the story would have not garnered nearly as much attention. I have
personally read about incidents where Indian and Asian people (some elderly,
who did not understand English) were beaten and abused by police officers, but
these stories never have nearly as much attention as stories involving African
Americans. It is important that all minorities realize that our struggle is
together, and we must give equal attention to all human rights violations in
our country.
