Week 10: Amylynn Nguyen

Week 10

In this week's reading, ““The Time to Fight is Now”: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue”, the discrimination and difficulties that Asian American women in academia are discussed. The article highlights the stories of the brave women of color in academia, and the steps that they took to fight the injustices that women like them face. To combat these injustices, these women started the Fight the Tower Movement. This movement was an effort from people of color, especially women of color, to start a revolution within academia. Reading this article really made me reflect about all of the concepts and ideas that we learned throughout the quarter. One statement that stood out to me in the text states that, “...the system of the university is designed to protect no one but itself.”. This sentence stood out to me because it made me think of social engineering and how society is designed to look down upon people of color, which leads to discrimination against these groups of people. The discrimination that results from social engineering can be seen in both society and academia. Reading about the journeys that these women faced is very inspiring. Some of the women mentioned in the article are still actively trying to fight against this issue, which shows how dedicated they actually are for equality in academics.

Question: Why is it that people in academia seem to turn their heads away from the discrimination towards minorities that is going on within their institution?
