Week 10 -- Tian Lan

Tian Lan
Week 10
ASA 002 A01

The article “The Time to Fight is Now”1: When Asian American Women in Academia Go Rogue” written by professor Caroline Valverde and Wei Ming Dariotis talks about how Asian American woman are treated unequally in academia, and it is much harder for them to get promoted and obtain a tenure than other ethnic group. However, they stand together to fight for the injustice and advocating a fair reteatment that disregards race and gender not only for themselves but also for all the people. This article reminds me the article “Fight the Tower: A Call to Action for Women of Color in Academia” that I read in the first week. It talks about many unfortunate incidents that professor Caroline Valverde experienced in during her battle for her tenure. Although she won the battle in the end, she has sacrificed her physical and mental health significantly, including miscarriage during her pregnant. After reading these two articles, I feel that university becomes more and more like a government agency and private companies and has lost it integrity and innate spirit. It has evolved to a place where ethics and justice are not paramount, and unjust decisions and behavior still exist. However, with the effort of all mistreat scholars, I am optimistic that injustices will be eventually perished in the academia, and university will rejuvenate to its original identity in the future. [1]

Question:
What is the best way for student to support our professor to fight against injustices in academia ?
